A Trusted Vet Clinic And Boarding Facility Is Essential For Families Who Travel

Prior to our last family vacation, our dog Lucy came down with something that none of us were expecting.  She is a very healthy dog and the only health problems she’s ever seemed to have was the occasional upset stomach that usually cleared up in a few days.  This time seemed a little different.

Lucy lost her appetite and I noticed she ate very little for a couple of days.  Given the lack of food she was interested in, she also became very lethargic.  I wasn’t sure what was going on as I had never seen her like this.  Needless to say, not only was I very stressed and worried for her, but we also had a looming vacation that our family had saved and planned for for quite some time.  We all were in agreement that we would postpone the trip if Lucy didn’t get better, as she was more important to us than anything else at the time.

5 Days prior to our planned trip, I took Lucy to the vet.  They ran x-rays and numerous tests in an effort to figure out what was bothering her.  Was it a parasite?  Onset of a more serious illness or disease?

Fortunately, it was not life threatening (although it could have become if left untreated).  Lucy had ingested one of her chew toys and it was clogging up her stomach/intestines.  It’s amazing what dogs can swallow.  The other good news was they didn’t have to operate.  They gave her some medicine to help it through her digestive system and assured us that she should be able to naturally pass it within 3 days (which she did).

I’m so glad she was/is okay.  By the way, we did make our trip.  Without the help of a good veterinarian, we wouldn’t have known what to do.  Lucy’s story/mishap is proof that your pet’s second best friend aside from you is the vet.

If you don’t have a trusted vet on your side, not to mention a good pet boarding facility for when you go on vacation, you need to strongly consider finding one that can become your pet’s and your family’s long-term friend.

In most cases, veterinarians work with a team of professionals made up of qualified support staff and technicians, and this makes it necessary to evaluate the competence and caring attitude of the entire vet team. It is also necessary to consider the location and fees of the hospital when making a decision; and could involve spending more money and time.

How to Get the Right Veterinarian

To get the right veterinarian, it is necessary to ask the people who have hired one before. You need to start with the recommendation from a neighbor, friend, dog trainer, animal shelter worker, and many others.

Start on the Internet, looking for vets in your neighborhood.  Here in Texas, Abilene Veterinary Clinic is the preferred clinic of choice.  They are friendly, knowledgeable and close to home.  Just as important as experience are their reviews and customer satisfaction.  Abilene Veterinary Clinic has an A+ rating with the BBB.  These were all important considerations when we sought out to find a vet.

The Yellow Pages provides important information as to the best veterinarian in the town, as it enables you to easily find the nature of services, staff and hours of work of the doctors. Another good thing is to check if the doctor has the membership of the American Animal Hospital Association. If he is a member, it means that he has met the standards of the organization in terms of quality care, equipment and facilities.

You also need to ask for board certification if you are looking for a veterinarian. The certification is given after the doctor has passed the examination required after going through study in the specialty area for between two and four years.

After making a list of the doctors based on the conditions mentioned above, these are some other things that you need to look for:

  • Is it necessary to make appointments?
  • Is the facility comfortable, well-organized and clean?
  • Does the practice have the required number of veterinarians?
  • Are the cages of dog and cat in separate areas?
  • Is there convenience in location and parking?
  • Are there professional staff members and technicians?
  • Is the staff calm, caring, competent and courteous, and is there effective communication?
  • Are ultrasound, X-rays, bloodwork, endoscopy, EKG and other diagnostics carried out in-house or referred to a specialist?

Be a Good Client

You we always have a good relationship with doctor if you have good manners.

  • Visit the vet regularly for preventive visits. Do not wait until the dog is ill.
  • Learn the normal things for your pet; this helps you in recognizing the the first signs of illness.
  • Schedule appointments and be punctual.
  • For the safety of your pet, as well as that of other pets and clients, use a carrier to take your pet to the office of the doctor.

It is Very Difficult to Break Up

If the veterinarian is not meeting the needs of your pet, it is necessary to look for a new one. If a dispute related to a fee or treatment cannot be resolved, you should contact the American Veterinary Medical Association or the ethics and grievance committee of your local or state veterinary association. A complaint can be filed with the veterinary licensing board in the state that you live if you have serious issues on medical competence.

Some Of Our Favorite Off-Season Travel Destinations

So it’s summer and like many families, you are still interested in traveling to destinations while the weather is great and the family still has time together. There are places you can visit that are budget-friendly and fun at the same, and you can even get all-inclusive vacation packages depending on the travel agency you work with. If you are not sure which destination to visit during the off season, read a few travel magazine reviews of different destinations and talk with friends and relatives who travel often.

Mexico

Mexico is a good travel destination all year round but you can especially get discounts on Mexico travel during the off season. You will enjoy the beautiful beaches as well as the spots within the country that are off the beaten path. Airlines often slash prices to Mexico during the off season and the hotels in Mexico constantly offer special deals for tourists.

Florida

Orlando is often very crowded in the summer due to Disneyworld tourists and those who want to check out the rest of Orlando. However, there are other parts of Florida you can visit on a budget and one of those parts is south Florida and northern Florida. If you visit Florida-based travel websites you should find some community festivals that are free or at decent prices.

Arizona

The temperature may be high but there is always the Grand Canyon to visit if you are looking for something interesting to do in Arizona You should also check out the Montelucia Resort and Spa which offers a stay there at $150 a night. Other cities you should visit include Scottsdale, Mesa and Flagstaff if you do not want to be bothered with the large crowds in Phoenix.

Guanacaste

Another off-peak destination idea is Guanacaste in Costa Rica. In off-season months, Guanacaste has fresh green, luscious scenery.  Combined with no/low crowds, no traffic and relatively inexpensive airfare and Guanacaste all-inclusive resorts make this an excellent destination given it’s popularity.

Biloxi

Biloxi is located on the Gulf Coast and this city has recovered greatly seven years after Hurricane Katrina struck the area. If you want to visit casinos and great restaurants without heading to Vegas, Biloxi is a smaller and better version for families who want Southern hospitality.

Traveling during the off season is a good time to do so because you get discounts from hotels, airlines and travel agencies. Depending on where you go, the crowds will also be smaller unless you are going to major tourist destinations. Before you plan your trip you should decide on where you want to visit and how much you are willing to spend on the trip. Research the travel agencies carefully to ensure you are getting the best service for your money, and get recommendations from those who go on off-season trips. Finally, be aware of other countries’ customs and laws.

Quick Advice For Planning Your Family Vacation

Every family needs to have a vacation where they can bond and take a break from the stresses of life. Recently my husband, little girls and I headed to San Francisco for a beautiful trip and we all got on the famous trolley minus the Rice-a-Roni (jambalaya is our rice dish of choice.) We also got a chance to visit Ghiradelli Chocolate headquarters where my girls came home with bags of chocolate and now I have to monitor their candy consumption for the next few weeks. Here are some tips on planning your family trip.

Plan At Least A Year in Advance

Never wait until the last minute, especially if a major event is part of your family trip. A few years ago before I had children my husband knew I wanted to visit Rio de Janeiro at least once in my life so for a year and a half we saved and cut back on cold Frappuccinos just so we can visit Brazil. During that time we researched different hotels and we found a reputable travel agent who offered us an all-inclusive trip to Rio during the Carnival season. It was pleasant and I even ran across one of my former college classmate who lives there.

Consider The Family’s Interests

When you plan the family vacation, you have to think about their interests and needs are. For example, if you are planning a trip to Berlin Germany with your teenage sons who are interested in learning about their German ancestry and history, you should locate places in Berlin that are educational and that will teach tourists about German history. Or if you are bringing twin newborns with you, look for a resort that has babysitters on hand.

Do Not Travel During Peak Travel Times

If you travel with your family during peak travel times such as Memorial Day or July 4th, it will be too hectic for the children and you may not get the best deal for the vacation package. It is best to travel during the off season between mid July and early September or during the winter months.

Preparing for a Driving Trip

If you and your family are going to travel by car to your destination, you want to purchase a GPS system if you do not have one built in your car or on the phone. It is also important that you fill the car up with adequate amounts of gas so that you will not get stuck on the road while on your way to the destination. You should purchase enough snacks and healthy drinks for the kids as well as portable games since kids can get fussy when they are bored. Always check the weather conditions before you go on the road.

Family trips are supposed to be memorable and when you locate the right destination and at the right price, you will focus more on spending quality time together and creating lifelong memories.
